Luca Insolia has joined the Institute of Economics of the Sant’Anna School and EMbeDS as a Research Fellow.

His position is co-financed by EMbeDS and the IASI Institute (Istituto di Analisi dei Sistemi ed Informatica "Antonio Ruberti") from the Italian National Research Council.

Luca is a Ph.D. candidate in Data Science at Scuola Normale Superiore -- a joint PhD program with Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, University of Pisa, National Research Council (ISTI and IIT institutes) and IMT School of Advanced Studies Lucca. He spent a period as a visiting scholar at the Statistics Department of Pennsylvania State University in the US. Previously, he held a traineeship at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in the Text and Data Mining Unit (Directorate for Competence), and an internship in the logistic industry as Data Analyst at Zalando’s warehouse.

His research interests encompass robust estimation and outlier detection, high-dimensional modelling, clustering methods, and missing data treatment with a focus on mixed-integer optimization methods, as well as continuous ones.

What are Luca's plans for this new chapter of his academic career, in connection with the objectives of EMbeDS? “Well, most research domains are facing new challenges with the availability of huge amounts of data and larger studies. This increases the chances of model misspecification, as well as the possible presence of spurious records known as outliers” -- says Luca. “I will investigate and develop methodologies that can tackle this kind of problems, which were considered unfeasible a few decades ago. I also plan to apply these techniques to the domains of Economics and Social Sciences”.
